At the station the warning is clear: any officer who lays a finger on the new chief, Vera Lancaster, loses the badge. Cole is the rookie the rest of the squad refused to ride with, which is exactly why Vera assigns him to her night shift. Episode 1 is the briefing and the private chat after it. She explains that the rest of the building drops its eyes whenever she walks past and that Cole is the one who looks back. Then she points out that the policy only restrains his hands, not hers. Five episodes of overnight patrols, a badge on the line and a superior who plays by her own reading of the rules.
